Hi Denise,

I have heard of such plans. In fact, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona offers a very similar plan. If you have a Blue Cross plan and you live in, say, Ohio and decide to move to Arizona, Ohio Blue Cross will cancel you. If your health precludes Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona from giving you a policy, you are entitled to the Blue Cross conversion plan if you apply in a timely manner. Their conversion plan is very much like the plan offered by United HealthCare. I believe there is no maximum out-of-pocket, and when last I looked, the lifetime maximum was also $250,000. I am not sure how ObamaCare will affect these numbers, or whether it will affect it at all.

I had a woman call me who has a Pacificare individual health insurance plan which is being phased out by United. This woman got the coverage through HIPAA guaranteed issue after using up her COBRA. This woman has many health problems and would be uninsurable without HIPAA. Her Pacificare plan has been costing her $900 per month. United has told her they will switch her to a United plan that is terrible and is nothing like the plan she currently has. It has a $250,000 lifetime maximum coverage and no maximum on her out-of-pocket costs. Have you ever heard of a similar example? Can United do this? Does this woman have any recourse? The new, lousy plan will cost $650 per month but she's willing to pay more. Can you offer any insight or advice?
