I’m overweight! Can I buy health insurance?

May 26th, 2010 | Arizona Health Insurance

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 34% of American adults are obese, and 68% are considered at least overweight.

With statistics like those, it’s no wonder that people regularly call us up and want to know if it’s possible to get a health insurance policy at their current height/weight.

The fact is, Arizona health insurance companies do look closely at your height and weight. If you are very overweight, you might be denied coverage or offered coverage with a higher monthly premium.

So how do you know if you can qualify for an individual health insurance policy? It’s pretty simple- each company has a height and weight chart that lists their acceptable height/weight ranges.

If you’d like to see where you fit on their chart, click the following links to download that company’s current height/weight guidelines.

If your height and weight fall outside of these guidelines, you still may have options for obtaining an individual health insurance policy.

And just to be clear- even if you fall within those guidelines, you can still be turned down for health insurance. The underwriters will look at your full medical history (not just your height and weight) and make a decision whether to offer you a policy.
